Camp Kirkwood

What: This year on August 28 through August 30th me and my grade went to a YMCA camp called Camp Kirkwood.

When: August 28-30.

Where: The camp was in Watha, North Carolina.

Why: Some reasons that we went were to meet the new people who were coming to 6th grade. And second to overcome fears. And finally the most important HAVE FUN.

How: We got to the camp by buses. The bus ride was a rainy kinda but fun ride.

Who: My entire grade plus teachers and some extra teaching staff.

Now some details about the trip: First for some reason we went to Camp Kirkwood during a Hurricane. Hurricane Idalia to be exact. So it was a very rainy action packed 2 days. I can’t even tell you how much the lake rose.  Ok  so we went to bed the first night and the lake is what 30 feet away from our cabin. Okay so we wake up the next morning and the water is 5 feet away from our cabin. So I kinda freaked when I saw how close the water was.

Here is a photo of the path of Hurricane Idalia.

Atlanta

I went to Atlanta a few weekend’s ago for two soccer games. My dad and I left Friday afternoon. He picked me up from school early at 1:30. It is a 6 hour 30 minute drive. Although it took about seven hours to get there. Our first stop was at about 3:00 P.M. We stopped at a QuickTrip which I never knew was a thing and I got a Cosmic Brownie and Donnetes. My dad ended up eating the Donnetes all by himself. We kept driving for a while then eventually stopped to get some Chick Fil A. I got a chicken sandwich and fries. Finally we got to  the suburbs of Atlanta. This is when I started to get really exited. Finally we made it to ATLANTA! We drove through downtown for five minutes then we saw a giant Ferris wheel that was super colorful. The Ferris wheel was right next to our hotel. So that was pretty cool.

I could not find a photo of the ferris wheel at night. Sorry. We drove into the hotel drive through area where we stopped and somebody gave us a cart to put our bags on. Right as we started putting our bags on the cart Liam one of my teammates showed up right behind me. I said hello to him then walked inside the hotel. This was a very nice hotel so I was wowed. Me and my team spent the rest of the night having fun and chilling around the hotel.  Finally I went up to my hotel room to find my dad laying on his bed watching T.V. I watched some football with him for a while. Then I went to bed.

Here is my teams logo I got the photo from the Triangle United website.

I woke up at 6:30 to the sound of the alarm that my dad had set. I took a shower and then got my soccer clothes on. I had an early game today so that is why I had to get up earlier. I went down the elevator  to the ground level. I came out and walked over to the breakfast area  to see my coach and a few of my teammates eating breakfast. I got some breakfast and then waited until we had to leave for the game. Finally we left and me and my dad started driving. We arrived at a Atlanta soccer field. I walked over to the field and started warming up with my team.

Here is a photo of my coach from the Triangle United website.

Sadly the game ended up in us losing 2-3. The game started with us getting an early goal but then our energy level goes down and they score then they score again and again. and the games ends with my teammate scoring a lovely goal of a free kick and ending the game 3-2. After the game I was feeling a little bit down because our coach was mad that we lost the game. but it cheered me up when we visited my mom and dads friend from high school to have some Brunch. It was a dad a mom a daughter and a son. the daughter was older and the son was my age. We had bagels with smoked salmon witch was delicious after a tough soccer game. To drink I had one of those naked smoothies which was delicious. During the meal there was talk about ping pong which I love by the way so I got exited.

After we ate me and the boy went and rallied on the ping pong table for a while til the parents came in and we played a few matches. After that we chilled and played with their dog in the backyard for a while. we made some plans to meet up wit them when they come to Durham. My soccer team made some plans to got o the Atlanta aquarium, so sadly we had to leave. What I liked about their family was that they were chill. Any ways me and my dad were driving back to the hotel when I saw this really cool mural and the mural had a quote on it my Martin Luther king Junior. The qoute said “If you can’t  fly then run if you can’t run then walk if you can’t walk then crawl but whatever you do just keep on moving forward.” MLK

Anyways we went back to the hotel got ready to leave and then did we went through Atlanta with my team and arrived at the aquarium pretty quickly because the hotel was a 7 minute walk. On the walk we went through this little area that had water shooting out of the ground and we ran through it which was fun.

Any way we got to the aquarium and took a photo then walked into to the load noisy beautiful ness of an aquarium. I am not going to tell everything that happended because it would be a lot and because I partially forgot but the two most memorable moments were seeing a whale shark and going to the dolphin show. Any ways after going to the aqaurium a few of my teammates and I went to the coke museum again I am not going to say everything that happened but what was really cool is that we got to taste so many different types of sodas and that the gift shop was the size of a Walmart. (Okay, maybe that was a little bit over exaggerated  but point is the gift shop was giant. I bought a bucket hat and some sprite and coke Tic-Tacs.

After that we walked to a pizza place feeling pretty drippy in downtown Atlanta me and two other of my teamates wearing our coke bucket hats. Any way the pizza place was good. After that we walked back to our hotel and saw the giant ferris wheel again. Me and my teammate wanted to go on it but it was late and we were tired.

The next morning me and my team had an early game so I went downstairs to the hotel breakfast earlier and then got on the road. It was a 45 minute drive to Fayettville where our game was so I got some rest in the car because I was still tired from the day before. me and my dad got their and feeling rested I was ready to go for the game. my team had met up and was watching a different game before we could take the field to start warming up. My coach was coaching his older team so he was not with us for a little bit. Soon after my coach gave the direction from his field for us to start warming up..

Soon after my coach came down from his game and we got ready for the game. My team and I had come all the way from Atlanta to do this we had to win today. Soon after coach announced who was starting for the game (I was) and we took the field. The game started and for a long while no goals were scored we kept playing us dominating the match but still no goal. TWWWWEEEEEEEETTT. Halftime. Our coach was happy about how we were playing but said that we need to put the ball in the back of the net. The second half started and we were playing quick and well. There was a long ball down the line to my teammate who headed a shot to the goalie who saved it but then out of nowhere my other teammate got the rebound and hit it easily into the back of the net. We scored! We celebrated then got ready to play more defensively and not let in any more goals. But we ended up scoring another goal off a header. We ended the game 2-0 and after loss the game before were super happy to win.

Me and my dad walked back to the car and then took of for an 7-8 hour drive back to Durham, North Carolina.

FINNNNAAAAALYYY! After a long car drive we made it back to Durham and our trip to Atlanta, Georgia was over.

Backpack Project

Backpack Project

Over the summer for Language Arts class we read a book called Finding Someplace by Denice Lewis Patrick.

Picture of the book taken by me.

In the book the main character Reese lived in Louisiana during the time when Hurricane Katrina was hitting to hit. During the hurricane she had to hide out at her elderly neighbors house. Reese had to pack a back pack before the hurricane with only the things she could fit to take with her while the hurricane was hitting Louisiana.

When school started our L.A teacher,  Mrs Williams made us do a project called a the backpack project. Mrs Williams asked us if a hurricane was coming what would you pack in a backpack. To start out with we got  papers with back packs printed on them. The backpack was blank and looked like this.

We were asked by Mrs. Williams to draw little things in the backpack that you would take with you.  We first wrote it in pencil then traced over it with a pen.  After that we colored in the items. Then we got to color the backpack and make final touches on it. At the end of this fun project the back packs ended up looking like this.

My backpack is near the bottom left it has a yellow background and is very colorful and it is also above the pink background one.

This project was very fun and gave the opportunity to be creative. I like how much freedom we had with this project and hope that we can do something like this again in the future.

Their was a second part to project with the book Finding Someplace. We had to write an essay about who we think the hero is. I chose Miss Martine as the hero of the story and this is why.

I thought that this essay was really fun to write. And again, I liked how you can have a lot of freedom with this post.

This will conclude this blog.
