Book Project

In LA we read a book where a girl goes to a new planet. Then our LA teacher came up with a project called My Ideal World. In language arts one day our teacher told us to get a bag of plants for homework. The next day we got the plants out and using ink made prints of the plants on paper. Then we would get a large piece of paper and cut it out and fold it to make it into a book format. Next we would take the plant prints and cut them out. Then we would glue them to book to create cool patterns. After this we would put on a title and boom we had a book. We lastly added text about our planets and the book was finished. This experience was super fun and special thanks to our LA teacher, Mrs. Williams for all the help. Below are some photos of the planet book I created.

Sports Seasons

This blog will be about our sports seasons, Jonah and Teddy play baseball and Callan plays soccer. Jonah is, on the top of the league that he’s in with me, will also be talking about his travel ball team which are the 12u Riptide.

Callan: As you might have heard above I play soccer. I play soccer for a league called Triangle United (logo shown below). I was on the MLS Next two/ NAL / Gold team. My soccer season is from the start of fall to the end of spring. In the fall season we started off by playing a tournament. In that tournament we were playing U14 kids (I’m U13) and we won. Then we started off the season pretty slow. We were losing and tying most games. But soon we figured each other out and we started whining a lot more to end the fall season. We ended up 3rd in one of our leagues and 4th in the other. Then came spring and we started to fall off and either lose or tie most games. We ended up 7th in one league and 3rd in the other. Although we had a rough spring, overall I had a lot of fun with my team and we made lots of memories together. If I were to rank my season from 1-10 I would say and 8.

This is the logo for Triangle United. I got this photo from the Triangle United website.-https://www.triangleunited.org/

Teddy: As you heard I play baseball in a league with Jonah. The league he and I play in is called South Durham Little League or SDLL.

Currently on my team I’m batting 8th which is an improvement because I used to be batting 10th or 11th. You might be thinking that batting 8th is kinda bad but my team is absolutely goated so we just have a lot of good hitters in front of me. We just went into the playoffs and we won in the first round against the Rays which had my best friend Matthew on it and another friend Diego. Our next game is tomorrow against the Giants which has another friend named Walker on it. Hopefully we beat them and move on to the next round where I think we would either be playing the Orioles which has Jonah and Finn who’s another friend, or the Braves which has one of my neighbors on it. Wish me luck!

Jonah: As you might have heard above I play baseball. I play baseball for a team called Riptide. Our team is division 1 which is the best division. We have recently played a lot of competitive teams including one team that had the number one 12yr old kid in the country and seven players from the number 4 team in the country. I also play in a league with Teddy, and I recently made the all star team. Below is a picture of my travel ball team.

My Riptide team is currently ranked 14th in the state however we used to be ranked better but our season ended. Thank you.

Tree Planting🌲

On march 5th 2024 the DA 6th grade went on a field trip to plant trees with Keep Durham Beautiful and another organization called something like Fair Housing of Durham. On this field trip our grade split up into two group. One group would watch a documentary about trees first, and then go plant trees, and the second group would plant trees and then watch the documentary.  I was in the plant first, watch second group. Our group walked onto the buses to get wherever we were going ( we weren’t told ) with doubt and wonder. On the bus some of my friends and me decided to count how many white vans we saw to entertain ourselves (don’t ask). After what seemed like a thirty minute drive we finally arrived at some mucky, muddy, yard with a brick building and some baby trees that were ready to be planted. We left the buses soon to find a lady greeting us and explaining who she was and what organization she worked for. She showed us what we were doing and how we would plant the trees. And then we got to work. I started by picking a tree for me to plant. I forgot what the tree I planted was called but it was one native to North Carolina, because the lady said that having native trees and plants is important. After we picked the tree we started to dig a hole big enough for a tree. After this we got the tree out of its pot and started to “rough the roots” which is a process in which we had to spread the roots out from the soil to get them ready to plant. Next we put the tree in the hole and straightened to make sure it grows straight up. Then we would start filling the soil around the tree. This was the most time consuming process of the whole ordeal. Finally, We packed in the dirt and made it even around the tree. Then we were finished. We went back into the bus to our school to watch the documentary which was pretty interesting. I learned a lot. This brings an end to my tree planting experience.

Planetarium Visit

My grade went on a field trip to the Morehead planetarium and science center on the UNC campus. It was super cool and a really fun experience. We got to the planetarium by buses. Whenever you ride in buses with friends it is always so fun for the kids but a nightmare for the teachers. It was about a 35 minute drive to the planetarium. When we got there everybody unloaded from the buses and looked around at the UNC campus in all its beauty… well all the UNC fans did (except for Jonah who was not there). we were dropped off so that the buses did not have to find a parking spot on a college campus with a bunch of eager kids. After we unloaded our lunches onto wagons everyone split up into their set groups and went different places. Some went to the sun dial in the middle of the parking lot to take a photo. Others went to the UNC gardens. My small group was with a math teacher named Mrs. Stanbury  and the boys in my advisory. it was a smaller group but I liked that. My group ended up going to the gardens first and walking around with Mr. Lovett’s advisory because he was not in a bus and had to drive and then find a parking spot. After walking around the garden a few times a bigger group of people went to have lunch at some benches under the sun. That was good because for some reason the day we did this was extremely cold and windy.

Here is a photo of the UNC gardens:

There were two main groups. Group 1 and group 2. I was in group one so we had lunch while         group 2 toured the exhibits. Lunch for us was from 11:30 to 11:55. After lunch we went into a building that all sorts of cool exhibits to look at and learn about. My favorite was an exhibit where you would sit in a small space like you were in a spaceship Then you would learn what it takes for astronauts to know where they are in space by learning the constellations. Next group 1 went to see the dome show which was super cool. It was like a giant television displayed across the roof. All of it felt so real and life like. The dome show was about Mrs and what it would take to travel there and back and have a successful mission. I learned a lot and it was great experience. After This we went to the “Phenomenal Physics” presentation. This was with an older science guy. He was actually a really nice guy though and he showed us a lot of different science experiments. Some of them included: Liquid nitrogen, magnets and Newton’s laws of motion. Again, this was a super cool experience and I learned a lot.

This is a photo of what liquid nitrogen looked like which was -360 Degrees Fahrenheit that I got from Wikipedia commons.

This would conclude our visit to Morehead Planetarium. Thank you for reading this blog.

Adam Gidwitz

Hey, this is our presentation on Adam Gidwitz’s visit to our school. First let’s start with talking about who this amazing author is. Adam GIdwitz is an accomplished author and writer of A Tale Dark and Grimm series, he also just released a new book called Max in the House of Spies which he gave us a quick overview of. He has received a Newbery Honor for his other book called The Inquisitor’s Tale.

At our school Adam Gidwitz also talked about how he never envisioned himself as an author although all his life he had a big imagination. With that he told us to be open minded and never think that just because you want to grow up to be one thing sometimes you may have talents that better suit something else. He told us stories about his early childhood and he talked about how his book Max in the House of Spies was based on a family friend.

And here are some photos:

The Season of Styx Malone

Right now I am reading a book called The Season of Styx Malone. I have not finished it but so far it has been a great read. I will give you a short summary about it right now. I will try not to spoil too much but here we go. These to brothers, Caleb and Bobby Gene are going to a party with their dad and sister. They end up trading their sister for some fireworks who some kid named Cory Cormier had. Their parents find out that they did this and are furious. They punish the brothers and Cory to one hour of chores a day. By the way it is summer. So then they have these fireworks that they have to get rid of, And that is where Styx comes along he takes care of the fireworks. Styx tells the brothers that they can sell the fireworks to get this motorcycle called the grasshopper. Anyways they end up trying to earn money. In different ways. And that is how far I have got.

Here is a photo of the book:

Basketball

Basketball

This blog is written by Jonah, Teddy and Callan. We will be talking about our basketball season. We are all on the same team with some of our other school friends and some other random people. Our coach is our friend Matthew’s dad. By the way Matthew is on our team too. So far our record is 0-11. Listen, our team’s average height is 4 foot 10, and we play against teams that are twice the height of some of our players. We have one more game coming up and hopefully we can win that, because it is our last game. Despite our frightening streak of games it has been a fun and great season with all of us improving a lot in skill, technique, and IQ of the game.

Hi, I’m Jonah and my strength in basketball is defense, ball handling, and fast breaks.

Hi I am Callan and my strength is rebounding and hustling. I am also pretty good at defense.

Hi I’m Teddy and I’m good at playing defense, shooting, and stealing.

Comic

In LA we had a project where we read a bunch of Wisdom Tales from a book of short tales that, well had wisdom and taught lessons. Any way after we read all of the wisdom tales we had one of the parents of a student in our grade come and talk to us about drawing and art. He is a super cool guy and very good at art. He inspired me and the whole grade. Any ways then in LA we chose a wisdom tale to draw and write a comic about. My favorite wisdom tale was The Prodigal Son. The Prodigal Son is about two sons who get land on a farm from their  father. One son uses the land wisely, but the other wastes his money and goes partying. The wasteful son comes back home poor and ready to work for his father. But his father is forgiving and gives him a feast. The moral of the story is be forgiving. Any way I retold the story and made it in to a comic. Here it is….

I made this comic on comic life 3.

I made this comic on Comic Life 3.

That is my comic! Did you like it? Please tell me in the comments.

This was a really cool project and I think that Our LA teacher, Mrs. Williams should continue to do it in the future.

Video Game Tier List

Video Game Tier list

Teddy and Jonah left me out so I have to do this blog on my own. Anyway for this blog I will be ranking video games on a tier list. This is my personal opinion, so do not get mad at me but please give me feedback in the comments.

History Project

As you can see in by the title of this blog, I will be talking about A history project. We started by talking about this package called the Civilization package that had three big groups; culture, power and trade. Each group had three subcategories. For power it was social hierarchy, institutional power and people power. For trade it was resources, economic systems and innovation and technology. And lastly for culture it was religion and beliefs, identities and artistic expression. Any ways we chose one of these topics and then read a text about Ancient Egypt. When reading the text whenever we saw something that was related to our topic we highlighted it. Once we finished reading the text we wrote down ten facts in our notebook that we had learned by highlighting stuff about our topics. By the way my topic was trade.

This is a photo of the civ package.

Once we wrote down ten facts we put a star next to the one of the facts that we thought was interesting. Our history teacher then came and approved it just to make sure that we could do a project on it. If he did approve it then you could start conducting research on the topic. My topic was early Ancient Egyptian writing. I started to conduct research on my topic and put it into slides which was the next step to the project. You had to put all the information into bullet points in a slide presentation that you would have to share with the class. I stared finishing the project and revising it to put my final touches on it. Presentation day came and I was ready to present my 1-2 minute presentation on Ancient Egyptian writing. I got up did the presentation and got a good grade. A win all around.

And that concludes this blog about my presentation in history. Thank you for reading.
